I had an argument the other night on this very topic. The response was “it wasn’t his but he did the work”.
I’d like to know what work he actually did and when he did this work? He obviously was pushing for his version of the bill, not the Domenici-Landrieu bill, through the Congressional election. It would seem to me that up until Election Day, Jindal was fighting the Senate version of the bill in order to get his “more comprehensive” bill passed. Of course, what good is a bill that gives you the world on a platter if the bill cannot pass?
It seems to me that any “work” he did on this bill was done at the very end to ensure that something got passed before he “officially” runs for governor. Of course he will quote newspapers like the Monroe Star* which reported that “Jindal led the way in the House to pass the bill that he estimates will generate $200 million for Louisiana during the first 10 years and about $650 million per year after that.” That should look really nice on a campaign flier and unless someone out there can educate the voters about why this is misleading spin, his supporters will just eat it up as the truth.
Of course, Congressman Jindal hardly did anything worthwhile on getting us our fair share of revenue from the coast or protecting us from category 5 storms during his first term. I know that for a fact, because while I campaigned on those issues as my top priority, Bobby Jindal ignored them.
Hindsight is 20/20 and Bobby Jindal should not be rewarded for acting on hurricane protection AFTER Katrina.

Good post Dan Z.!
Bobby Jindal reminds me of Dan Quayle … As Dan Quayle was no John Kennedy … Bobby is no Gandhi.
[…] Bobby Jindal takes credit where none is due […]
Reference the Dan Z comments of 18 Dec 06.
I don’t recall Landrieu mentioning Jindal’s bill anywhere! Moreover, Mary made claim to some credit on “her” bill and was dressed down in public by Domenici.
Simply put, Jindal’s bill wants royalties from EXISTING offshore production AND future production. Landieu’s bill will give us FUTURE royalties only- we need the money NOW!!!!
BTW, those states that will have an “undue burden” under Jindal’s bill are CURRENTLY RECEIVING ROYALTIES FROM PRODUCTION OFF OF OUR COAST!!!!!!!!! Of course his bill will meet resistance; those currently receiving these royalties (instead of Louisiana) want to keep the cash flowing their way!!
As for Florida- while they bicker about oil rigs on their horizon, CUBA is contracting with Shell Oil to construct oil production platforms just over Florida’s horizon (i.e. the same oil fields will be sucked dry). That’s right! Royalties that could be in Florida’s account, and Louisian’s account, will go to Fidel’s checking account instead. Moreover, you know that CUBA will not require the same environmental standards that the U.S. requires, so Florida faces an even GREATER risk of oil slicks on the beach!!!
As for Jindal being our governor, please! ANYONE IS BETTER THAN BIMBO BLANKSTARE!!!!
This happens quite frequently.
Jacques: Let’s work at the wording of the Jindal Press release vs. the wording of the Landrieu press release. Shall we?
Jindal: http://blog.bobbyjindal.com/2006/the-hard-work-pays-off/
“As the author of the House version of this legislation, I have been working around the clock to ensure that this bill gets done before the end of the year.”
Landrieu: http://landrieu.senate.gov/~landrieu/releases/06/2006C09513.html
“The Louisiana congressional delegation and Governor Kathleen Blanco, Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and many local officials, business leaders and civic groups never stopped working to achieve this goal,” Sen. Landrieu said after today’s House vote.”
Notice, Jindal says that it was HIS hard work. Landrieu shares the success with everyone.
Jindal’s bill put in provisions that would have required states to jump through undue hurdles to keep drilling off their coasts. So much for Republicans being about the 10th amendment and the powers reserved to the states (what some call “states rights”).
And yes, those states are currently receiving money. But instead of wording “if you dont drill, you dont get money”, the bill required states to either jump through hurdles to avoid being FORCED to accept drilling off their coastlines. Do you see the difference? Do you see why the Jindal bill was doomed to fail? Yet Congressman Jindal kept fighting for that bill until his Congressional election was over. Why? One can only assume that it was to make sure that this bill couldn’t be viewed as a falure.
Whether Jindal will be a good governor has nothing to do with the job Blanco is doing. This is one of the top illogical statements made by Jindal supporters. They say “Blanco is horrible, so vote for Jindal”. There are many other people running for governor. Even if you do think Blanco is a horrible governor, that doesn’t mean that Jindal will be any better. I am voting for someone other than Jindal because of what Jindal has done and said in the course of his political career. It has nothing to do with Blanco.
So instead of saying why people shouldn’t vote for Blanco, why dont you tell us why we should vote for Jindal? The answer is because you can’t. Once you get through the spin, it is clear that Jindal’s record is a collection of smoke and mirrors.
“And yes, those states are currently receiving money. But instead of wording “if you dont drill, you dont get money”, the bill required states to either jump through hurdles to avoid being FORCED to accept drilling off their coastlines”
BOO HOO!!! Funny they don’t mind TAKING the royalties that are rightfully ours. Of course they don’t want drilling off their coastline, especially since we appear so willing to destroy our coastline. Fact, with most oil production already off our coastline, it will take THEIR coastline for us to see any production royalties. See, as they cry foul about using their coastline, they enjoy OUR royalties and OUR oil!!!!
Last time I checked, if you have your name listed on a Congressional Bill as an author- one or several- you can legally claim authorship. Moreover, knowing the mental capacity of Jindal vs Landrieu, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that HE actually worked on HIS bill. I doubt Mary did much more than add her name to it, which is probably why she’s crediting everyone else. BTW, just wait until Mary starts her campaign for re-election, let’s just see what she takes credit for, whether she actually did the work or not, hmmm…
Why vote for Jindal?
He votes for conservative issues 73 percent of the time ( his conservative voting percentage was much higher pre-katrina). He has concrete plans with goals and objectives for leading Louisiana. So far, Mrs. “Doubtfire” can only create committees and commissions to study problems. At least she didn’t “lie” during her campaign- all she ever proclaimed was the new study or commission she would create!!!!!
“BOO HOO!!! Funny they don’t mind TAKING the royalties that are rightfully ours.”
So instead of just simply stating that those states should no longer get our share of the revenues, we use the federal government to usurp the ability of a state to make decisions for itself? Some conservative you are!
“Last time I checked, if you have your name listed on a Congressional Bill as an author- one or several- you can legally claim authorship. ”
That is correct. The bill that passed was the “Domenici-Landrieu “Fair Share” Plan”. Not the Jindal-Pombo bill. So Jindal cannot claim authorship of the bill that passed because he did not author it!
“Moreover, knowing the mental capacity of Jindal vs Landrieu, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that HE actually worked on HIS bill. ”
Im sure he worked on his bill…. and his bill failed. I don’t know about you but I would rather a rep that can get bills that help us PASSED over a Congressman with “higher mental capacity” who authors bills that cannot pass. His bill failed to pass, hers passed. It is just that simple. To try and use this as an example of why Jindal is better is absurd!
“BTW, just wait until Mary starts her campaign for re-election, let’s just see what she takes credit for, whether she actually did the work or not, hmmm…”
Senator Landrieu has EVERY reason to take the credit that she is due. Why? Because the bill with her name on it passed! Jindal, on the other hand, is a liar because he claims that it was his “hard work” that got the bill passed. His “hard work” almost made the bill not pass at all! He worked AGAINST the Domenici-Landrieu bill through his election.
“Why vote for Jindal?
He votes for conservative issues 73 percent of the time ( his conservative voting percentage was much higher pre-katrina). ”
Yeah, I noticed his “flip flop” on decreasing student loan rates. Voting “for conservative” issues recently means voting for bigger government, more government spending, and government intrusion into our lives. I dont know about you, but that never used to be the definition of conservatism.
“He has concrete plans with goals and objectives for leading Louisiana. ”
Like what? Is he going to gut the Louisiana Department of Health more? Or perhaps he will make sure that women cannot get an abortion to save her life. Maybe he will cut student financial aid more (like he supported when he cut over 12 billion dollars from federal student aid previously).
If Jindal leads Louisiana anywhere it will be into the toilet! I have seen NOTHING from him to prove to me he will be a good governor. All I see from him is spin, lies, and a sick twisted view on abortion that would force a 12 year old victim of rape to “keep it” if she was impregnated by the scum who raped her.
“At least she didn’t “lie” during her campaign”
Jindal lies all the time! He said he supported education in Congress during the last campaign when he actually cut student aid and voted against decreasing student loan rates. He said he supported ethics when one of his first votes was to reduce House ethics standards and has accepted money from Halliburton, people conneted to Abramoff, and Tom Delay’s now defunct ARMPAC. Some ethics!
You know what they say. How can you tell a politician is lying? His lips are moving. Jindal is no better than any other policitian. He is a far right winged extremist and so far there are 2 republicans in the race who would be much better choices than him.
Very nice Dan
Thank you
Dan Z,
Actually, I am a conservative in the States Right’s traditions, which is exactly why I believe WE have the RIGHT to ALL the royalties earned off OUR shores. However, its the Feds and other states, who are enjoying OUR ROYALTIES, who are saying sorry! Since it is very unlikely that we will ever see the royalties that are RIGHTFULLY OURS, the next best thing is to take royalties from future production off other coastlines.
“That is correct. The bill that passed was the “Domenici-Landrieu “Fair Share” Plan”. Not the Jindal-Pombo bill. So Jindal cannot claim authorship of the bill that passed because he did not author it!”
Let’s have a class in Political Science 101, shall we? Every bill, introduced in either house, must have a “companion bill” in the other house. Once each bill clears its respective chamber it goes into conference committee. This bipartisan committee is made up of members from BOTH HOUSES, i.e., Jindal and Landrieu sat on this conference committee!!!!! Both bills are actually combined in a sense, with the most agreeable verbage from each bill combined to make one bill. Since most of the verbage agreed upon came from the Senate (that part which states FUTURE ROYALTIES AND NOT CURRENT ROYALTIES presently STOLEN FROM US BY OTHER STATES “States Rights” as you see it) the Senate bill is what geets approved in the Senate, duh, then goes to the President for signature. Consequently, both legislators can claim credit for authoring the bill, they BOTH “worked on it”.
Well, in the sense that the actual verbage that he submitted- IT PASSED THE HOUSE, it washed in conference committee- yes it “failed. However, if you look at Bobby’s record for submitting legislation, you’ll see that he has submitted- and has had more legislation approved- than any freshman congressman during the last session (congressional record).
Even if the bill fails completely, it take more than just one vote to pass a bill. The credit goes to authoring the bill. Bobby, as well as most of Louisiana’s delegation, is VERY JUNIOR in the House and Senate. Therefore, we are lucky to get ANYTHING PASSED in our favor.
Hey, for the record, I diagreed with Jindal’s public support of Dardenne (a liberal) and the fact that he might just vote “Present” instead of “Against” seating “Dollar Bill” Jefferson on the Homeland Security Committee. However, compared to what else is out there, right now, he has my vote.
“Actually, I am a conservative in the States Right’s traditions, which is exactly why I believe WE have the RIGHT to ALL the royalties earned off OUR shores.”
I believe that as well. Although I do not incorrectly assign “rights” to states. Rights are reserved for the people (as are powers). The state only gets powers, no rights.
“Let’s have a class in Political Science 101, shall we?”
I don’t need it, but ok.
“Every bill, introduced in either house, must have a “companion bill” in the other house. ”
Actually, every bill that passes one house must pass the other to go to the President. Bills can pass one house before the other house even considers it.
Here is a simple site that explains it. http://clerkkids.house.gov/laws/index.html
“Once each bill clears its respective chamber it goes into conference committee. This bipartisan committee is made up of members from BOTH HOUSES, i.e., Jindal and Landrieu sat on this conference committee!!!!! ”
Yes they did sit on that committee. And the bill that came out of the committee was the Senate version of the bill… NOT the Jindal/Pombo version.
“Both bills are actually combined in a sense, with the most agreeable verbage from each bill combined to make one bill. ”
Wow, are you dizzy after all that spin? Since it was the Senate version that passed, Jindal cannot claim to have authored it. In that committee, Jindal FOUGHT for his verbage and lost. His wording was not included. Period. He didnt author the bill. His “hard work” almost caused it to NOT pass in the last Congress… but his misleading spin would have you believe that he was responsible for it all.
“Well, in the sense that the actual verbage that he submitted- IT PASSED THE HOUSE, it washed in conference committee- yes it “failed.”
Thank you for admitting that the Jindal bill failed.
“However, if you look at Bobby’s record for submitting legislation, you’ll see that he has submitted- and has had more legislation approved- than any freshman congressman during the last session (congressional record).”
Again, nice spin. http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400634
” Bobby Jindal has sponsored 53 bills since Jan 4, 2005, of which 45 haven’t made it out of committee (Very Poor) ”
So yes, he has sponsored many bills (many of which have failed to get a vote).
“Even if the bill fails completely, it take more than just one vote to pass a bill. The credit goes to authoring the bill. Bobby, as well as most of Louisiana’s delegation, is VERY JUNIOR in the House and Senate. Therefore, we are lucky to get ANYTHING PASSED in our favor.”
Funny, when he ran in 2004 it was stated that his “clout” in D.C. would enable him to get things done. Now that he is unable to do it, you blame his lack of seniority? You can’t have it both ways!
“Hey, for the record, I diagreed with Jindal’s public support of Dardenne (a liberal) and the fact that he might just vote “Present” instead of “Against” seating “Dollar Bill” Jefferson on the Homeland Security Committee. However, compared to what else is out there, right now, he has my vote. ”
Well, it is good to see a Jindal supporter actually come out against something Jindal has done. I hope you take the time to educate yourself more about why Jindal will not be good for governor though. Educate yourself about the others who will be running in the Governors election as well. You may not think certain people are good now, but I am sure that when all is said and done there will be other Conservative candidates that would be better for this state than Congressman Jindal.
It sounds to me like the creater of this website has a slighted view of the topics at hand. If you would like to do more research and offer a less biased approach to the topics at hand you may discover that the (facts) you display are a bit skewed and do not uncover the whole truth. Bobby Jindals offshore revenue bill is a great step forward for Louisiana and contrary to your own beliefs, he did create the bill. The credit is his because he is the main component in this bill and worked constantly to gather supporters in Congress and the Senate regardless of party affiliation in order to insure its success. Bobby Jindal is the leader our great state needs and has proven he is committed to excellence.
Bert Jones, you are WRONG. The bill that passed was the Domenici-Landrieu Bill, a bill created by the Senate Energy Committee. Jindal’s bill never made it to the Senate, and moderate Republicans opposed it after Republicans lost in November. Melancon and Landreiu lobbied the Democrats who voted for the bill, and they won. Republicans in the House were already going to vote for Landrieu-Domenici, as all of them received campaign contributions from big oil. So you are wrong, Bert Jones. Jindal did not pass a bill in the House. If he did, his ranking at Congress.org would be much higher.
Good try, but you lost. The offshore bill is the Landrieu-Domenici Bill, and Jindal had NOTHING to do with it.
HAHA.
Bert: Where do you find your information? I am very sorry that you have bought on to the spin presented by the Jindal camp and the Louisiana Republican Party.
Here are the actual facts.
1) Jindal’s version of the bill, as amended by Pombo, passed the House.
2) The Domenici-Landrieu bill passed the Senate.
3) In order to make it to the desk of the President, the same version of the bill has to pass both houses.
4) The bill to make it out of committee was the Senate version.
5) The House then voted to pass the Senate version, word for word.
6) The President signed the Senate version.
This is not bias, this is fact. You can research it yourself if you don’t believe me. It is very simple. Jindal did not author the Domenici-Landrieu bill. Jindal failed to have his legislation make it to the desk of the President. To claim otherwise shows that you are either believing liars or you are lying yourself.
Jindal fought for HIS version of the bill, working against the Domenici-Landrieu bill until he was re-elected. That is when he started to cave and finally voted for the Domenici-Landrieu bill.
Good thing Mary voted aganst cheaper drugs for louisiana and even made a false claim on her own website about a gulf coast recovery bill.
Have you heard about the Gulf Coast Recovery Bill? Probably not — because it doesn’t exist. Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu (D.)’s official web site last week announced: “President Vetoes Gulf Coast Recovery Bill,” effectively leading citizens to believe such a bill ever existed. The bill she was relabeling was the supplemental war appropriation bill that Landrieu and her senate porkpals had larded up pretty thoroughly.
Vote Bobby Jindal if your tired of the goverment we have in louisiana now.
The bill that was started by HR1591 was a bill for gulf coast recovery. Did she put the name of the bill in quotes? Or did she just refer to it as a bill that would help with gulf coast recovery.
See, there is a difference. Voting for Jindal is a vote for weak ethics, partisan politics, and political extremism. If that is what you want, then I feel sorry for our state if it happens.
Thats ok Dan if i was making money off of hating Bobby i would not be worried about whats best for louisiana either.
I am voting for Bobby Jindal for a better future for louisiana so who are you voting for?
Or do you even care enough to have even picked someone to vote for?
Bob: Why is there such a big rush for all these pro-Jindal people for me to pick the candidate I am supporting? No, I have not chosen a candidate yet. For you to say that it implies I don’t “care” is absurd!
While I would have supported Breaux (since I saw him as the best possibility to beat Jindal), I think the fact that I am waiting to make a decision on who I am supporting shows that I absolutely care about our state and what happens to it. I am willing to take the time and educate myself on all the candidates before I make a decision on who I am supporting.
If you really cared about Louisiana, you would take the time to educate yourself on the truth about Bobby Jindal. If you really cared about Louisiana you would stop buying the misleading spin from his campaign and the Louisiana Republican Party.
Have you taken the time to educate yourself about the policies and positions of all the candidates running for governor? What about those who would enter the race later? Will you give them a chance? Or will you just back Bobby Jindal, regardless of who runs and regardless of what he has actually done in his political career? If you are unwilling to look at other candidates and to look at the truth about him, I have to question if you really care about the future of Louisiana.
If his record at the Louisiana Department of Health gives us any clues about the future of Louisiana, electing Jindal will be the worst mistake we could make. Just look at Mississippi! They followed the Jindal model of cutting healthcare to run a surplus (Jindal cut healthcare services to get a surplus when he was in the department of health) and now they have increasing infant mortality rates!
If Jindal’s solution is to just hack and slash without looking at the effects his cuts will have on the people of Louisiana, I see no reason to elect him and I see no way that electing him will give us a “better future”.
Actually, Bob, Vitter will not allow medicare to negotiate prices with pharmaceutical companies. He filibustered that bill. Landrieu voted for it. And Landrieu voted for importation. She just wants to ensure that it is safe. Vitter, bought and bossed by the insurance industry, benefits from the high prices of drugs and the high premiums insurance companies can charge as a result. I recommend you consult the facts before swallowing Vitter’s lies. I posted a diary about Vitter’s hypocritical position on pharmaceuticals at my website.
[…] They must have gotten the big super gulp sized Kool Aid when they ran this one. Maybe the fact checkers over at the Times Picayune where asleep for this one.
